Thanks Anner - also where I can find it when I forget <G> Usually, I
get a few offlist comments when I burst forth with some wierd experiment
or bit of research, but folks were so quiet in response to this one, I
figured it was a bit too buggy to interest anybody.

I got so intrigued that I bought a couple of slightly more advanced bug
books for general info.

I decided to experiment with sprinkling finch food (mostly proso millet)
and thistle seed along the iris rows to see if I could lure my hoard of
ground feeding white-throated sparrows, goldfinches, and other wintering
sparrows into closer proximity to the aphids. I sprinkled seeds along
about 1/3 of the rows. I whistle these guys up in the morning with a
poor imitation of a white-throated sparrow song, but it still took a day
or two for them to find this new, more dispersed source of seed. It's
been way too soggy to check the aphids lately, but by the end of the
week I should see if this has made any difference.
