As well as finding out where information is missing and where there are
opportunities for home experiments. If I can make those sweet little
winter bird beggars earn their keep by picking a few aphids, that will
be very satisfying. I adore my visiting white-throated sparrows - the
sweetest song there is - fortunately iris bloom starts here about the
time they leave for northern homes. You yankees let me know if some
trained aphid picking sparrows show up in your gardens later this year.
What caught my attention was that these aphids are here during winter,
when temps are dipping to 15oF at night now and then, and when insect
predators are pretty much non-existant. I may contact the extension
folks and see if they can help me figure out which species this is and
more about its natural history (whether it alternates between host
species at different stages of its life cycle).
I notice that the current Gardens Alive catalog specifically mentions
iris borer control for one of its nematode concoctions - I assume this
is the same concoction that listers have reported to be successful. Did
everybody win $20 or should I feel special? Several iris-related 'toys'
available for that price.
