There are some good reasons for using a 90-100 mm macro lens.
Image quality is better than with supplementary lenses.
Tubes and bellows arrangments cut down on light and thus force lower
f-stops with concomintant loss of depth of field--unless you can do long
exposures.
Supplements and tubes/bellows force you to get very close to the subject,
while the low telephoto capacity of a 90-100 mm macro allows you to work at
a reasonable distance.
You do get what you pay for. You might want to check out one or two of the
big dealers that either exchange equipment or sell used equipment.
Another alternative not so far mentioned is a ring that allows you to
reverse your regular lens, turning it into an imitation macro. I've never
done this but heard that it works just fine, though lower f-stops are
needed because of the relatively low light-gathering area of the back side
of the lens.
Also consider that there are folks (like me) who are to photo images what
the audio purists are to sound equipment--we can really see (hear) and
appreciate the differences. (I have a really cheap CD player and a really
expensive camera). But if you only want to document your iris collection
and get some nifty slides to show friends, the less expensive alternatives
might be perfectly OK for you.
