Hello Sandra,
Thought I would throw in my opinion also. I agree with what Bill Shear has
told you and Bill is definitely correct when he tells you that a person can
see the differences between lens qualities and or add-ons for existing
lenses in the photographs or slides you take. I have a Nikor 55mm Macro
with f stops ranging between 2.8 and 32. This lens is around 20 years old
now and if memory serves me correctly it's original price was around $700.
I have not shopped around for lenses in many years so I have no idea what
these lenses cost today. I'm not too sure what some of the other list
members are talking about when they say the Macro lens can only be used for
close up photographs, I also use mine like any ordinary (non-Macro) 55mm and
take many distance pictures with it. I can focus my lens as close as about
1 inch from any object which is way too close to an iris unless I am trying
to pick up the iridescence in a single petal very close up! :) I use 2
lenses on a very consistent basis, the 55 Macro and a Nikor 28mm. My
overall favorite lens is the 28mm and I probably use it 90% of the time. It
was also mentioned that you need to have a tripod, I second that
recommendation. I also use a remote shutter control, this keeps any camera
movement down to a minimum. Depending on existing light I also use a
removable flash that I can position where ever I want around the iris no
matter where the camera is located. This flash is one of the best
investments I have ever made. Another inexpensive investment you will want
to make for your lens is a clear filter to protect your lens, you want to
keep any dust or finger prints off the lens.
I will be happy to add any more opinions if you wish! :)
Glenn
