RE:PHOTO: lenses

I would second the recommendations for a true Macro lense. I use an
older NIKON camera without autofocus. I picked up a used 55mm Macro lens in
excellent condition from a used camera store for ~$150. I can get clear
shots - handheld - because of the 'faster' lens ( lower f-stop ) which still
allows for 1/125 exposures with reasonable light. With the macro it is easy
to fill the frame with a single bloom, even with the smaller flowers. The
lens is versatile enough to be used for regular (people or garden) pictures
as well. Rather than get a tripod I think a monopod is better in the garden
- where the tripod can damage adjacent plants, and gets in the way of the
other visitors on tours etc.
