Sandra,
I would like to suggest an alternative for you to consider... one that
should be substantially cheaper than buying a good macro lens. Try some
macro filters. With a good 50mm lens, you can get a set of 3 filters that
shorten your focus distance different amounts for around $25 - $35.
If you can find a good macro lens used, then you might pay anywhere from $75
to $300. However, a good quality new one can run as much as $500 and up. And
I don't see any point in not getting a good one when you can get a filer set
to do a reasonable job for a lot less.
My filter set for my old Olympus OM-2n, (35mm manual or aperture preferred
automatic) works like so:
- 50 mm lens with no filter can focus down to about 14"
- add first filter and it gets down to about 9"
- add second filter and its about 6"
- add third filter and its down to about 4".
I have found that my very smallest iris reticulata's photograph best with
only filter one or 2 on. I also took photos of some tiny toad lilly's and
only need the first two filters.
(You can see an example of one of my iris reticulata photos at:

Now if I could only take better photos!!!
Hope this helps,
Cathy
