Chris replies:
I think that the term "metamorphosis" is somewhat misleading/incorrect in
its use to describe the observations/development of a seedling for the years
prior to a potential introduction. The term metamorphosis seems to invoke
thoughts of the commonly found misconception that a blue iris changes to a
white iris. (and please... lets not get started down that path of discussion
again, there is plenty in the iris-list iris-talk archives on this topic)
The term "performance evaluation" would be much more accurate in describing
the pre-introduction growing stages of an iris seedling.
The seedlings should undergo:
1. a stage of growth development towards becoming a mature iris from the
seed stage (this may take a year or two or three depending on the initial
vigor of the seedling)
2. a stage of another couple of years is required during which the mature
seedlings should be observed to carefully note the exhibited characteristics
of the cross. Growing conditions may be different during those years and
affect simple things like height of bloomstalk to more complex
characteristics.
After this term if the seedling has survived the selection process put in
place by the hybridizer then it may be ready for consideration of
introduction.
