Re: HYB: seedling metamorphosis

From: linda Mann <lmann@mailhub.icx.net>

Thanks all, for your comments on changes in seedlings. That all makes
sense.

Like Donald Eaves in Texas, I see a lot of variation in <store bought>s
from year to year, most of which I attribute to year to year weather
variations and general health of the critter.

I can see how those factors would also be very important in evaluating
seedling performance too, re: things like reliability of bloom, stalk
stunting, late freeze sensitivity, uniformity of bloom size.

Not that any of these things would mean it wasn't worth introducing if
it had other special qualities, such as a new color (fire engine red!),
but that it might not do its best everywhere all the time.

I was starting to wonder if we were talking about genetic drift/chimera
type things again. (Which I guess would also make sense in a young
plant - need to wait till all the surviving parts are the same, unless
the goal is another HONORABILE type)
