I'm happy to hear that this method has been found effective in Central
Virginia. The Local Coorperative Extension office indicated to me they
thought it would not be substantially effective in this part of the state.
Since Mr. Hartpence is even further north in New Jersey, I did not mention
it.
Because of the length of time necessary to effectively solarize an existing
iris bed, certainly no less than six weeks at the peak of hot weather and
proably more in less than optimum circumstances (I believe Tasco in
California leaves his ground under solarizing wraps for several months) it
may be advisable to pot the newly dug rhizomes up until they can be
reintroduced to the bed. See the Archives for endorsements and practicalities
of potting up rhizomes when planting is delayed. Bearded irises can be held
out of the ground for weeks or even months and survive, but they are not the
better for it, and they will dessicate at a rapid rate at high summer.
