CULT:seedling variation

From: StorYlade@aol.com

Talkers,

In regard to the seedling variation question--

If I told you that I think all irises go thru good and bad years, would you
agree? Also, there are years that everything blooming looks great. These
are years I call "the year of the bloom," when branching and height may vary
but the bloom is gooooorgeous.

If you have a beautiful seedling the first year, and you keep it for five
years, it may never look that good again. There can be a variety of reasons.
Unstable genes in the babies? Weather and soil conditions affect
everything. Bummer!

But, my concern is the seedlings that were tossed at the end of the first
year because they didn't measure up on that maiden bloom. I had a seedling
that looked terrible on maiden bloom, and then came back to win an EC at a
show two years later. Hum??

Thoughts?

Betty in Bowling Green, KY--will we get snow, ice, or rain?
