To the question:
Yes I guess most stuff gets fried but the explanation is that in the
absence of harmful organisms, the good ones repopulate extremely
quickly. Don't recall where I read that but...

Also there is some suggestion that nature helps us out by giving us
pathogens which die at lower temperatures than do the useful ones.
Viruses for instance will be killed by relatively small increases in
temperature. i am not a physiologist but I think that it is assumed that
the rise in body temperature when we contract a virus is actually part
of the bodily defense mechanisms.

All of the above sounds like pseudo scientific mumbo-jumbo but my
experience is that all of the results are good (unless you try to get
two uses out of the poly and it shreds). That is a major mess.

I am surprised by the situation which you mentioned of a massive
infection following solarization. They must have planted preinfected
stock I think. I really do not know of any treatment which is as
effective and benign in side effects. The only downside that I am aware
of is the use and disposal of the poly sheets.
