RE: CULT: Solarization

From: Jeanne Holley <irisarian@yahoo.com>

Hi Chris,

I went to the Garden Guides solarization URL and
printed out the page. I have a question for you
and/or anyone else who is willing to answer it.

I have a "BIG" problem. My large iris garden was a
field. I managed to stay ahead of it (okay, up with
it) until a year ago last summer when I got shingles.
I was not allowed to get hot and sweaty...in Southeast
Missouri that is not a small thing...so I couldn't
work outside at all. It started again last summer - I
had been really getting things going and then got
shingles one more time - not as severe but I still had
to stay in nonetheless.

My iris garden is almost a field again and I am moving
the iris out of it a section at a time to redo it to
raised beds. Yes there are those of us who do not
have raised beds still living on the planet...when you
have as many iris as I have and don't sell them,
raised beds become a very expensive proposition.

My question is in regard to pulling the weeds prior to
solarization. Could one remove the iris and then
spray with Round-up - leave the area sit and then till
it up and solarize it, or is it possible that the
Round-up would cause additional problems. If I'm
going to have to get all of the weeds out first then I
might as well just go back to my hand weeding and
using Over-The-Top.

I appreciate any input anyone has to offer. Thank
you.
