I think that this is probably the best solution for you.  If you have a
lot of perennial weeds, I do not think that solarization will do very
much damage to most of them.

Roundup has the advantage that it does not persist in the soil as a
herbicide. When it comes in contact with mineral soil it is deactivated
and I guess actually becomes a slight source of phosphate fertilizer. 

I generally try to avoid using herbicides but there are occasions where
Roundup can be very useful. Just try to not use it as the first resort.
