Returning from an unplanned trip to Texas, I decided to pull off Hwy.
380
(that new six lane concrete thoroughfare I suppose was built for
traffic
to the Texas Motor Speedway) and visit with Marie and Aunt Shirley.
If you
turn off the highway there, Willie's Place, is your landmark. Also
don't
let the 'No Outlet' sign deter you either. Just before you get to
the
lake, make a right and follow the lane. Please watch out for the
dogs.
Marie's is on the left near where the road ends.
Marie and Aunt Shirley are fine and looking forward to the big event
in
April.
Shirley will turn 97 sometime this summer and did not venture
outdoors.
Marie insisted we tour. In her LA convention beds, growth was
rampant on many things. She pointed out the massive clumps of GREAT
WHITE
HOPE (Haymon) and a white tet seedling from the late Joe
Mertzweiller,
which she said is the most gardenable of the tets.
We walked on down to the point and the water where a friend of
Marie's is guesting beardeds This should make a breathtaking scene
and be a photographer's delight come spring.
Walking back up the hill, we peeked at Shirley's TB's, which really
haven't been put to bed yet because of the lack of cold. There were
many
faded blooms and stalks on rebloomers.
A clump of Monty Byers' TB WINESAP with two stalks and four flowers
was fluttering in the breeze as we rounded a protected bed.
Marie's beds are planted liberally with all types of companion plants
including wildflowers. Texas bluebonnets are there, too.
Fortified with coffee and inspiration, I was able to get back into
the car and continue my trip home.
