Thank you to everyone who advised me about use of manure. Keeping it
strictly in the root zone and not allowing it to contact the rhizome was
what I had concluded and will do. Looking forward to having one survive
to put on a growth spurt. Will do it better this summer.
Divided and replanted Thornbird last July and when I did the final
checking just before Christmas all pieces were on tippy toe (or head
down) with roots attached but quite exposed -- a bit like looking at
electrical wiring. All I could do then was right the upside down ones
without disturbing the roots, put some dirt on the roots and hope.
After Christmas I covered the area with boughs from the tree. I don't
recall having this problem 20 years ago but seem to consistently now.
Sometimes have put a stone on the rhizome to get and retain good contact
and sometime have pinned them down with old label loops. They root but
heave. Right now we're getting 6-11 inches of snow on them. Next week
it'll probably be 50 degrees. G-r-r-r-r.
