I'm not sure this tippy-toe thing with Thornbird is cold related. Everytime I replant it, it does that for me,too, and I am in nice warm Texas. It doesn't matter if I plant it in the ground or in a pot; in sandy soil or clay gumbo. I always have to come back about 6 weeks later and add dirt around the roots.
Dell in Plano - please send some of that excess white stuff my way!

Divided and replanted Thornbird last July and when I did the final
checking just before Christmas all pieces were on tippy toe (or head
down) with roots attached but quite exposed -- a bit like looking at
electrical wiring.
