Snow Dumps,  In Anchorage, Alaska the Nordic Ski club has a guessing game to
see when the first sizeable amount of snow accumulates.  Some years
Anchorage is nearly snow less, yes I know its hard to believe and some years
they are buried.  The years that they have a sizeable amount they have to
haul it to the snow dumps scattered around town.  They have equipment that
cuts the snow banks away from the edge of the streets and augers it into
dump trucks and hauls it off,  the streets especially in the residential
areas have  walls that line the streets.  Going out to walk the dogs gets
real tricky because the Moose also use the streets and they don't want to
get off into the hard packed snow on the sides so one quickly turns around
and hi tails it back home, and hoping the moose and dogs didn't see each
other. In February for the Annual Fur Rondy Festival they have to haul snow
back into downtown for the Sled Dog Championships and yes they also haul
snow back onto Fourth avenue for the start of the Iditarod Sled Dog race
from Anchorage to Nome.    I don't know of anyone who every had a guessing
game for the thaw date of the biggest snow dump but I do know that driving
past one on Minnesota Drive  sure looked like a fun spot to go sledding,
that was until it turned an ugly gray/black and we knew it was full of salts
that they laid down on the streets. Hopefully the Iris that are growing in
Anchorage are fast asleep under a nice covering of snow this time of year.
I know the snow dump series isn't about iris but it does give this digest a
lot of depth and we all learn something from it.
