I've taken to using the little paper sales tags that they sell in news
agencies. They have a piece of string to tie to the plant. Ball point pen
seems to wear the best with these. I have had some markings fade with
weather, and am still learning what works best, but because I keep very
thorough records in a book on my desk, I have not had any confusion. If you
do a lot of different crosses per clump, then you can get into trouble. I
identify stalks by marking with a permanent marking pen (1,2, etc)
I write the whole cross in full on the label, rather than an abbreviation. I
have only had a couple of tags (out of 150 or so) disappear, and cross
referencing with my indoor records solved any problems.
Cheers, Jan
