Well, we use a variation on that theme.  For some years now we have actually used the same tags over and over.  We have made up some nifty tags using cut-up pieces of venetial blinds (metal) and written in indelible ink a series of numbers from 1 to 100.  Some are doubled up.  We have attached to those tags long pieces of twine that are resistant to rot etc.
 
All we do then is use the same tags over and over and just record the details in a book.  The tags are impervious to weather (and sun bleaching the numbers off) and the book with all the details in it stays warm in dry inside.
