Hello Walter,
    I can not answer for all newspapers, but I did free lance for one in a large
city near me for a year. It only took working with the editor on the first article
to find out she knew nothing about plants.... had never gardened. She was hired
because she knew words and budget constraints.
    Picking something up from the wire service is a whole lot cheaper than hiring
a free lance and even less expensive than staff writers. Gardening has always been
low on the list in publications for general public, even though most of the
population gardens in one form or another.
    Thank the gods for all your iris buddies on the list, hum?
