Have been meaning to say something since this thread began.....
Sassafras is indeed an aromatic tree-shrub and it is used for making tea. An old
herbal remedy for many aches and pains, as well as a "spring tonic".
Aralia, Spikenard, or Wild Sarsaparilla, is used to make the drink named after the
plant, and the roosts are used for ... what else?... "Root Beer"
