germination

I have never felt that I have figured out the best method for germinating
seeds. My germination rates are consistently below fifty percent. As far as
I know, other cold climate growers have a similar result. I don't know
whether it is the cold winter, the late spring or the lack of precipitation
that is to blame. I do know that when Marky Smith takes pots of seeds to
Salem for the winter, they germinate better than when she leaves them in
Yakima.

I soak the seeds for three to five days before planting them outside in
sunken pots of germination mix in December, making sure they stay damp.

Any ideas?
