Hi all,
Might just be the cold...this is one of our more-like-zone-7-in-zone 8
winters...
but it jogged me to do some crabby winter observations whilst considering
those that might leave the garden this year...for whatever it's worth:
How ironic that I love sky blues and I'm having a heckuva time getting some
of the supposedly nicer ones to do anything here...VANDA SONG and MARIAH to
be specific. Both gifts so I can't complain about losing an investment but
VS squeezed out one small flower year before last then nothing...only one
increase too.
How I would've loved to see MERIT bloom, but nada for the third year. This
is especially dissapointing because I did feed it, treated it to extra water
when needed and was eyeing it to cross with a Jim Loveland MTB seedling he
gave me a few years back. But no bloom from either. Shame was that I
mentioned the cross to Jim and he thought it'd be a good one. I may just
for auld lange syne still give those two ONE MORE YEAR.
TWO of the light blue standards and blue plic falls pattern: HARMONICS,
and ACOMA are also no-shows for bloom going on 3 years...although ACOMA has
at least increased nicely.
To be more cheery, copious increases on new ones before this real cold
hit:
PRO NEWS, sporting 4 increases on either side of a new rhizome...also NEW
DISCOVERY doing very well, after realllly late arrival from ASI....and BOLD
STATEMENT ( I DANCED when I got this one as an extra from Superstition)
coming in third for the most increases on a new one. I have found BTW,
that these numerous increases on a new arrival DOES indeed bode well for
them, at least here in hot and humid/sandy poor soil SC. Although I know
some feel that the increases were set already wherever they came from, I also
have had ones that already had increases just plotz when they got here.
Anyway, the new sprinkler system should help eliminate the dryness situation
this year...maybe I'm not as cranky as I think I am...think I'll peruse some
catalogs...

zone 8 of Sc, high only at 45 today
