Linda, that is a very interesting article.
One thing that was learned about peaches, plums and apples is that it takes a
certain number of "degree-days" above 40 degrees after adequate chill is
completed to flower. The fruit trees respond like clockwork once the chill
requirement is met. Once we understood that, and kept track of the
degrees-above-forty as they occurred we could come pretty close to a calendar
date for peak of bloom, which also sets the harvest time, incidentally.
I suspect irises (under mid-continent conditions at least) respond much the
same way.
I'd begun to wonder if something had happened to my membership on this
list--no messages. You make me glad to know the list is still alive.
