Linda:
Gigolo (appropriately, at one time often used as a breeder) was an important
component in the Keppel and Ghio plicata lines. It was a mediocre grower (at
best) in my experience, and had a reputation as being rot-prone (and passing
that gene along). I guess it was used because it had a brighter brighter
ground color than many of the earlier plicatas. The later generations were
much better, in my opinion.
Glistening Icicle is a nicely colored (almost a true blue) neglecta; not as
high of a contrast as some, but maybe just a llittle more ruffled than most of
the Schreiner blue bitones. I lost mine; it was a mediocre grower and
inconsistent bloomer. The only time it ever did anything for me was in a
sunny area with heavily amended and too-damp-for-iris soil. In that spot, it
kept reblooming faster than it could increase, generally with shorter (20")
stalks. The rebloom and the color would make it an interesting breeding
partner for Louisa's Song, but I just don't feel like going to the trouble to
replace it.
Lots of 2" sprouts in my pots now; Spouting Horn X Louisa's Song and Louisa's
Song X Secret Service are two of my most prized crosses to germinate in this
batch.

Yes, Neil, you win the bonus round <g> Thank you. Fascinating to think
about these critters in historical context.
There are a few oldish ones that I haven't tried here that I'm curious
about. RIPPLING WATERS is one. From your description of its evolution,
I'd guess it would do ok here. I'm still amazed at how well PINK FORMAL
does here, considering how poorly so many recent pinks do.
Two others I'm curious about are GLISTENING ICICLE and GIGOLO.
SNOW FLURRY's behavior was such a surprise to me. I bought it after
reading Ben Hager's article about it. Supposedly, SNOW FLURRY is not
particularly hardy in our wretched weather, but it did reasonably well
here.
My prejudice is that GLISTENING ICICLE won't do well in my garden, &
GIGOLO has a rep for being on the puny side. Nothing like seeing with
my own eyes.
Maybe I will finally get around to ordering from Riverview this year &
can try to id my unknown variegata/?Barcelona, plus pick up these
