Re: COMP: genealogy database

When I did a google search yesterday, the only ones I found specifically
for plants were combination software and databases - one for potatos,
one for fruit trees?, etc.

I also ran across a pdf of a poster by some folks from Wageningen (sp?)
describing Peditree, which 'would be available for downloading soon'.

When I searched for Peditree, I found a place where it could be
downloaded (both Mac and PC versions), but that website was promoting it
as a program for human genealogy, as an upgrade of Pedigree. Both
Peditree and Pedigree use regular spreadsheet data as input. I think.
The poster claimed their version of Peditree was able to decipher
complicated embedded cultivar crosses.

One of the combination software/databases I found was a 'soon to be
released' version for daffodils that was going to sell for an arm and a
leg.

If it weren't too expensive and too hard to figure out how to use, I'd
like to have some PC pedigree software too. Like Robin, I like to do
pedigrees by hand some of the time, but during bloom season, it would be
nice to be able to have the more alert PC do it for me.

Maybe if we reach Mallorn's $10000 goal, pedigree chart generation can
be added to the online database.

<Human genealogy programs can be used for iris,.... After using these
human based programs for several years, I am looking for something made
specifically for plant breeding which will go into a data base and
extract the chart entries automatically. I understand that Mike Lowe has
one of these programs on his Mac. Does anyone know of one for Windows?
