I dunno, Robin, those don't look like any aphids that show up here.
Someone here recommended a combination systemic insecticide and
fertilizer for roses as a remedy for aphids. It's granular - mix it
into the soil and water in. I've had some major aphid infestations on
plants indoors, and a colony of aphids can be especially devastating to
small seedlings. I decided I would try it on the fall germinated
seedlings this year, and have really been impressed. It works great.
I don't remember who posted that idea, but thank you.
I wouldn't want to use something like this outdoors (concern about
leaching into groundwater/surrounding streams here). Hopefully, most of
it will be gone by the time I move these babies out in the spring. The
directions say it is effective for 6 weeks.
Active ingredient is disulfoton, Bayer brand 2-in-1 systemic Rose &
Flower Care, 12-18-6.
