I can easily understand the offensive thoughts some have to the word
"lurker". It is one of those words that has sort of cropped up on the
internet for use in forum jargon. I have a couple of forums operating on
TheGardenSite.com and like to refer to list participants as "members" or
"subscribers". If they have joined the list, then I consider them all
active as some post messages, some read messages, and some do both. Each
member is getting what they want from the forum, if not they would
unsubscribe. From private messages I have received from members, I believe
it is often those who do not post, or seldom post, that receive the
greatest benefit from their membership on the list. They are often the ones
that are being presented with information for the first time and are
learning the most. It is great to have those members with specific
knowledge available and willing to share it with those who are interested in
such content.
