AIS: Sad News - Eugene Kalkwarf

Hello Iris Friends,

We learned today of the death of Eugene Kalkwarf, the current Regional Vice President (RVP) of Region 21 (Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota). Gene was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2003 and has spent much of the time since then in the hospital.

Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He loved irises and iris people, AIS, Region 21 and the local iris clubs to which he belonged. He had been past president of the Lincoln Iris Society at least 3 times during the past 25 years. He had also been Treasurer, Assistant RVP and RVP of Region 21 of the American Iris Society. He loved to show his irises, won many a blue ribbon, and was a Master Judge in the American Iris Society as well. He and his wife Bonnie were always present whenever groups of irisarians got together for meetings or tours in the Region. He attended most of the AIS national conventions during the past 20 years. His garden was on the AIS national tour in 1990. He was very much looking forward to this spring's Region 21/TBIS meeting and tour in Lincoln, Nebraska. To honor him and his wishes, his wife Bonnie and members of the Lincoln Iris Society are ensuring that his garden will be on the tour in May during the convention.

The funeral will be held at 10:00AM on Friday January 23rd at the St. Paul United Church of Christ, 1302 F Street in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Eugene is survived by his wife Bonnie, and 2 grown children, John Kalkwarf and Jeannie Kalkwarf. Condolences may be sent to Bonnie Kalkwarf at 8521 W. Haven Rd., Lincoln, NE 68528
