OT: CHAT: Lofters (was Lurkers)

Betty, I like "Lofters." That has such warm associations for me. As a
youngster, before we converted over to all-orchard farming, we had cattle in
addition to row crops and some fruit orchards. One of my least loved tasks
was to go up into the loft of the barn and fork down the chopped, very dusty,
hay into a stanchion from which the dairy cows could gather around and eat.

The place was quiet, peaceful and had a warm, wonderful ambience--and equally
wonderful acoustical qualities. I got in the habit of singing and improvising
at the top of my voice. Sometimes it would take me an hour to do the simple
ten minute task with the hay. I hope the cows were as entertained as I was
with the "lofting."

From the loft, I could look down on the world without being seen. I found
that a most comfortable position. I think I have more in common with the
"lofters" than the talkers, even as talkative as I have been.
