I use chicken wire over the pots and then layer the straw/leaves  over the 
wire.  I did like the leaves (shredded) as I can still lift them  up and off 
with the wire.  A few will fall through but not many.   

Oak leaves contain tannic acid?  Somewhere I got the idea that tannic  acid 
helped leach the inhibitors in the seed?  
 
Mulch has many benefits.  Seed that pop to the top of the container  will not 
sprout.
