Anner,

I believe that "Clovis" as a male name has come down
to us as a representation of an earlier form of the
same name that in more recent times is usually spelled
"Louis". The original Old Germanic form of this name
is usually given as "Hluodowig" (modern German
equivalent="Ludwig") from "hluda"=famous and
"wiga"=war, thus the sense of the name is something
like "famous in war" or "renowned warrior". The "C" in
Clovis is probably a representation of the original
guttural sound indicated by the initial "H" in
Hluodowig", which would have been sounded something
like the "ch" in the Scottish "loch", or a
transitional sound as the pronuncition was mutating to
its current form, which it reached sometime in the
Middle Ages.
