I've spent the last two evenings playing with this idea of dosage. (for flats)
I've created a very basic formula. If it's flat then in has 100% of what it needed to be flat, and as such is assigned that dosage. If it's a flat parent then it {maybe} is 50%, and thus the grand parents would be 25%. I decided that for the purposes of this calculation that assigning a dosage to third generation progenitors would be a waste.(the genetic material is diluted by 1/2 each generation so by the time it was 'present' in a 'subject cross' it would probably be insignifigant.)
Using this formula I generated a list of cultivars that 'always' have a certain dosage. SIX PACK will always be 100, ICE SCULPTURE will always be 25, etc. Thus, if a cultivar with an assigned dosage shows up in a non-flat pedigree, regardless of how far back, it will have that assigned value. Then, counting down the generations from that progenitor, I divide the assigned value in half with each generation. If two parents of a cultivar have the same dosage then the dosage 'rides' down. ( if pod is 25 and pollen is 25, you cut them both in half and add them together it's still 25)
It's kinda cool because now I can quantify that yes SHIPSHAPE is a common progenitor, and no CHIVALRY is not. That helps un-muddy some strains. It's kinda rotten though because now that the strains are un-muddy I can see a few trees I've been barking up are off base. And then it's cool again because there seems to be a new 'modern' strain developing.
I'm still unsure what to do with a few iris. CRYSTAL DAWN has two registered pod mates which so far have not produced any flat progeny. Do the podmates get the same dosage?
Do cultivars that are the result of the same cross, from different breeding programs get the same value. For example: IMPERSONATOR(Babson 74): TAMBOURINE X SHIPSHAPE and SCENARIO(Hager 78): TAMBOURINE X SHIPSHAPE. If I calculate SCENARIO's dosage based on the assigined value of known progenitors then it is only 50 compared to the 100 assigned for IMPERSONATOR. I get that S is not actually flat and represents different gene combinations, I'm just having trouble swallowing that it is as much different as half.
y'know, just writing it out has helped some of these ideas settle in my head...
