A week or so ago, I said a few things about genetics of cold stratification of non-iris species and such. Two things surprised me.
One, the positive feedback, which I appreciated, of course.
Two, that no one knew who I was. No, I'm not famous or anything. But I thought I had introduced myself when I joined.
Mostly I've lurked here, over a year now. I just hadn't felt I had much to add to the discussion. I'm here because I want to learn all I can about iris cultivation and breeding. I'm on many other such groups, too. I stay because you folks, and same on the other lists I'm on, know more than me about iris, a lot more. You have experience and share it. And you know the literature on iris, and share it.
Sure I read such books as are written on iris. I use the Kansas State University library, and I get free inter-library loan from them. And I take advantage of it. But a book, as great as it is, will be behind before it is published. Here, I get updates.
So, I have been a professional plant breeder, 3 years doing vegetables in Niger, Africa. Not Nigeria, though I spent a day there. And I spent 4 years as a grain breeder back here in Kansas.
Then I gave up professional breeding after a divorce, as I got the children on the condition that I stay in Kansas. So I've done construction, school teacher, washed dishes, and am now doing maintenance at a truck stop. Children are grown but I don't shop around for plant breeding jobs elsewhere because I am near retirement age, and 160 acres will be paid off in 2 or 3 years. And I have replaced my children partially with some plant breeding populations.
My iris breeding interest include breeding pink arilbreds. Anyone who wants to know my strategy there can check with the aril group archives, or private email.
But basically, there my biggest problems will be to produce and germinate lots of seeds, lots of seeds, so the discussions of seed germination were of particular interest to me. Discussions of which iris are good at setting seeds are also useful.
Crosses of TBs and I. tectorum, and flat iris are also particular interests.
But until I get a pink arilbred, that will be my main goal. Make that a fertile pink arilbred.
So Hi everyone.
Back to mainly lurking.
Walter
