I wasn't as consistant taking notes on deaths as I wish I had been, but
at least I saved all the tags from dead plants from the first cross.
However, I may have forgotten to make an individual label or may have
lost a few labels, so take these numbers with a grain of salt.
CRAZY FOR YOU X sdlng IC1: (IMMORTALITY x CELEBRATION SONG)
50 seeds (probably one pod), 14 germinated, 6 or 8 died, 7 are still
alive
reverse of above
48 seeds, 12 germinated, 3 died, 9 are still alive.
PINK FORMAL X CELEBRATION SONG
42 seeds, no notes on seedling deaths before lining out, 18 survivors
reverse of above (took longer to germinate)
52 seeds, at least 2 died before lining out, 9 survivors
Results from both of these crosses is consistent with the theory that
pod parents have more influence on plant habit (i.e., health/survival
rate), but numbers are too small to get too excited about.
IC1 is a super healthy here (although it has rotted & died twice in
Georgia- apparently prefers the gravel soil here). CRAZY FOR YOU is
ok. Both sets of seedlings seem to be intermediate in health so far.
None have bloomed yet.
PINK FORMAL is reliable, but not a rampant grower and foliage is average
health. C SONG is reliable, rots occasionally, susceptible to foliage
diseases. Both sets of seedlings have unhealthy foliage. Future
compost. Experimenting with pinks.
First two species crocus blooms today, plus more seedlings coming up
outdoors. Still plenty of time for zero degrees F here this winter.
