I think it CAN mean that it takes a while for a baby iris to grow to  
maturity.  More than the apparent time from seed to rhizome.  I find  this especially 
true with reblooming seedling. But maybe if I grew more  oncer seedlings I'd 
find this to be the case there too.  
 
I'm simply trying to say that I'd hate to see someone trash a really good  
seedling due to low bud count alone.  Not based on a first year bloom for  sure. 
 Or even a second.  
 
Of course, there are some irises that never have more than 4 or 5 buds, and  
are often introduced.  But they should not be encouraged by  awards.

Lots of reselect seedlings still hit the compost pile.
