Hello, Betty,
I agree. For me, plicatas and luminatas are harder to grow than regular
irises. Lovely Dawn is a fair grower (good for a plicata). Blackberry
Tease is the biggest, strongest one I've ever had. I crossed them in 2006.
Germination was good, but the offspring are the smallest, weakest looking
irises in the whole seedling bed. They have no chance for a bloom this
year.
There was no rebloom here this year, and I understand there was none in this
whole area. It must have been affected by our extremely hot summer. I was
delighted to get reports of my Cloud Reflection reblooming in October and
December in Vancouver, WA, even though the December bloom stalk froze.

To add a couple more cents worth here . . . some patterns just seem to be
difficult!? I don't work with luminatas, but I've had the impression they
can be difficult?? Maybe I should make a couple of crosses just to see.? ?
Nice, Francelle.?
?
Like you, I'm finding that seedling plant strength is very hit or miss with
each set of parents. A X B may all be extremely weak, while A X C may all be
strong, with no apparent difference in B & C for health or growth rate.?
?
Now and then, one parent seems to yield strong seedlings no matter what I
cross it with (keep in mind that <anything> I can cross it with here is
probably pretty strong to start with).?
?
And some apparently very strong parents don't seem to produce strong
children unless it's just the right combination with something else.?
?
Discouraging and frustrating.?
