Re: Re: HYB: seedling strength (was photos Results of two luminata crosses)

To add a couple more cents worth here . . . some patterns just seem to be difficult!? I don't work with luminatas, but I've had the impression they can be difficult?? Maybe I should make a couple of crosses just to see.? ?

This past year gave a lot of new lessons here.?Not sure I'm understanding them all, yet.

Recap: 1) Warm March that started early bloom.? Several of the seedlings from Blatant by All Revved Up bloomed just as the freeze hit.? (I was able to see them bloom in the house) This cross gave mainly strong well growing seedlings.? Several rebloomers. ?Children from a cross with Renown look extrememly weak.? But maybe they just start off slow??

2)Easter Freeze: Five night and days.? Killed all bloom stalks but few rhizomes.?

3)Summer long drought: eliminated all rebloom that didn't live in a drip line (dew) or where seedlings were being watered.?Was the lack of rebloom a result of the freeze???Or it?was the result of the drought?? How much was?due to?the high temperatures, both day and night?? Or was it a combination of all these?

Seedling Loss:? New seedlings were well watered and did fine.? But in the first year seedlings, many totally dropped their foliage and looked dead.? (Still without rhizome mass)? Once the rains started and the temperatures dropped many of these put up new foliage.? However, the clumps appear stunted, or not fleshed out as one would normally expect of 2nd year seedlings.? (Ones that should have given maiden bloom the?spring of 2007)? How far reaching will this stunting be??

Those that appeared to be weak may not actually be weak!? Just slower to increase??

The more we grow, the more we learn.?

Nice, Francelle.?
?
Like you, I'm finding that seedling plant strength is very hit or miss with each set of parents. A X B may all be extremely weak, while A X C may all be strong, with no apparent difference in B & C for health or growth rate.?
?
Now and then, one parent seems to yield strong seedlings no matter what I cross it with (keep in mind that <anything> I can cross it with here is probably pretty strong to start with).?
?
And some apparently very strong parents don't seem to produce strong children unless it's just the right combination with something else.?
?
Discouraging and frustrating.?
?
Species crocuses are starting to bloom!?
