I, too, Peggy and Anita, agree that spirited discussion and exchange of ideas greatly benefits all plant fans and indicates healthy growth for AIS. Thanks Bob and Paul for your input, which I do not find acrimonious in the least. I just looked at the updated Iirs Wicki and am very impressed at the amount of work accomplished so far. Thanks to all Bob's volunteers and hope you continue through the coming dreary days of winter!! Rita Gormley, recently transplanted to De Leon Springs FL and will continue growing irises!!! -----Original Message----- From: dpmallen tds.net <dpmallen@tds.net> To: iris@hort.net Sent: Sat, Jan 2, 2010 9:02 am Subject: Re: [iris] Re: wikiup for our photo data base (was Bulletin) Mr. Pries and Mr. Archer are intelligent iris people and AIS is fortunate to ave them as working members of the society. Let them agree to disagree. he shrinking iris world needs every interested party. Thanks to both for a pirited discussion and please stay with AIS. heers, Peggy Harger-Allen, Boone County, Indiana, Zone 5 On Sat, Jan 2, 2010 at 7:49 AM, Robert Pries <robertpries@embarqmail.com>wrote: > Anita well said; thanks Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anita Moran" <avmoran1@earthlink.net> To: iris@hort.net Sent: Saturday, January 2, 2010 5:50:18 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [iris] Re: wikiup for our photo data base (was Bulletin) Hi All, I hate butting into these things but I think you guys are talking apples and oranges. The Plantstep program is just that a program that an individual purchases and uses for their own purposes. The wiki is an online data base that will take years to fill with all the information about Iris. If you go to wiki and look at other plants there is no reason it can not be down loaded for personal use. I have hybridizer pro and though it has problems I can get data from the online checklist and plug it into the database. I use my own pictures or those I have permission to use. Dave's Garden has made a valiant attempt at producing a data base for all plants and it is very ambitious. But the old saying Garbage in Garbage out for data is the same now as it ever has been with talking computer data. There is little control by DG for there are too many plants and too little knowledge. The wiki on the other hand is purposed to have iris people who check entries. THis step provides a greater measure of accuracy for the wiki than in other iris online databases including Garden Web. Tinker's garden is probably the best online database for Daylilies and I use it extensively. That is the kind of information the wiki should and could have if the time is taken to make it so. Does this make sense?
