Lynn and Elena: identification of unknowns is a service offered to HIPS
members. If you're not already a member, dues may be sent to Ada Godfrey, 9
Bradford Street, Foxborough MA 02035, $5.00 single annual, $12.00 single
triennial. Newsletters are published twice a year. Phil Edinger, HIPS
variety ID chair, has published two excellent articles on how to photograph
and and measure your unknown for identification purposes. I can mail xeroxes
of those articles to you if you send me your snail-mail adresses off-list.
If you've made an educated guess by comparing yours to a published photo,
sometimes the most direct way to ID it is to purchase a piece of that variety
from the commercial historic iris growers, and do a side by side comparison
when it blooms. If you're totally in the dark, photograph and measure the
iris according to Phil's directions, and mail the photos or slides to him.
It's always nice to include an envelope with return postage in the packet,
and I try not to send photos of more than 3 or 4 varieties a year, (or every
other year) because he is always inundated with requests for help.
I don't want to discourage you from using the service, because rare varieties
are still being found, and there are many medians and dwarfs, especially,
that are "lost".
Seek out HIPS members in your area, have them visit your garden, and see if
they can make some educated guesses as well. Before labeling your unknown
with anybody's guessed name, though, always try to obtain and grow a "known
piece" next to it for a positive ID.
