Taste in Irises

A short time back there was a considerable discussion about what a good iris
is vis-a-vis the AIS standards versus what some people on the list like.
Since in judging a new iris, even when applying the AIS standards, there is
considerable leeway vis-a-vis color, form, etc., I thought the the following
quote particularly apt:

Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723–92, the English painter, said about taste:

"Could we teach taste or genius by rules, they would be no longer taste and
genius."

Personally, I believe Sir Joshua was on to something! Clarence Mahan in VA
