In the same vein as testing the correlation between purple leaf bases and
survival, does anybody have suggestions on a way to monitor growth
initiation? I would like to be able to look at the relationship between soil
temperature and timing of growth initiation, but can't figure out how to do
it in a way that isn't terribly (unpleasantly) labor intensive. Iris that
break dormancy too quickly get nailed here (don't bloom, more likely to rot,
etc). If I knew how to measure it, maybe I could find some clue as to
parentage that would help in picking winners. Most late bloomers are slow to
respond (some are late because of day length, I think, but some are late
because of temperature), but some earlier bloomers are slower to respond than
others (and therefore become midseason or late season).
Ideas?
