Dorothy,
I have found ESTHER THE QUEEN to be fertile both ways. Her anthers are
larger than those on TBs and they carry copious amounts of fluffy
pollen.
ESTHER crosses waiting for first bloom in my garden:
ALOHA MOON X ESTHER THE QUEEN 21 seedlings from 30 in the one pod
SILVERADO X ESTHER THE QUEEN 3 seedlings from 22 in the one pod
ESTHER THE QUEEN X CHANTED 3 seedlings from 41 in the one pod
ESTHER THE QUEEN X STAR BABY 6 seedlings from 24 in the one pod
ALOHA MOON, CHANTED, and STAR BABY are SDBs. I couldn't help saving
some pollen for SILVERADO. ESTHER blooms early here with the SDBs.
The crosses were made in the spring of 1994, stored until Thanksgiving
when they were planted in 1-gallon black plastic pots (each pod gets its
own pot) and left outside in trenches to overwinter. No special
attention was given to the seeds that winter other than an occasional
watering (our winters are quite dry here). The seedlings that sprouted
in 1995 didn't bloom in 1995 or 1996, but nothing else did in 1996 so
I'll hold them over another year. I am still keeping those original
pots in hopes of delayed germination, but nothing yet. Hybridizing, I
am finding out, gives new meaning to the term "delayed gratification".
I think ESTHER is about 1/4 aril (I better check into this) so my guess
is that her children would look more like TBs than arils.
Sharon, can we have a list of some of ESTHER's children?

great time to finish the chart of ESTHER's ancestry that I started in
1994.
