OK, I'll go. I only ordered16 packets. (There is only so much room
on the window sill.) I wanted to try I. decora again. The seedings
pop out of the starting media in a couple of weeks, and it grows
great but won't come back the next year for me. I didn't order it
because there was only one small lot and I've had two chances. I did
order two I. setosas, two Moreas, a Dietes and the elusive yellow form
of I. halophilia.
This is a little late, but my stratigy is to first pick several
things that I don't have (including other irids) which available in
large lots. Then I pick a few select ones that I really want to try
that are available in smaller lots. I usually try for things that I
can't just buy as plants. Working with seeds is fun but it's a long
wait for blooms. If I really want something I try to find a plant.
Beware many of your selections will come back with only a few seeds.
Four is the minimun they try to pack but sometimes they aren't all
good seed. For this reason and because it's winter and I'm bored I
use Anners approach of making it as involved as possible. I tried
different techniques but I haven't settled on anything. (Next to try
is Sharon's diurnal cycling.) Anner is right that each type probably
has different optimal conditions for germination, but the plant them
and hope seem to work somewhat for all types. I don't think the "how
to" book is closed for any of them, just read the SLI or the SPCNI
newsletters. Anner, please tell us more on your experiences.
Finally, I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who tries my seed. Let
me know how they did.
