Donald--
We are in a somewhat mild climate and we have found out that when our
winters are colder, our Siberians look better. Last year we had a
relatively mild winter (only 12 frosts and 30 the coldest night) and our
Siberians bloomed almost at ground level. We've been told it's because
of the mild winter.
So far this winter, we've had already had 14 frosts (with 29 the
coldest) and we have about 4-66 more weeks when a frosty night is
possible. Normally, we get between 20 and 30 frosty nights a winter
(and 25 is a real cold night for us).
We don't grow many Siberians, but all normally brown to the ground and
are cut off. Maybe it's not scientifically true, but when we have
colder winters, our Siberians look better! You adapt to what your
climate throws at you!

A little fog today and high of 53, another frost expected tonight (that
could make 7 in a row--I'll have to get out our record books to check if
that's the longest stretch of frosts we've had in the 6 years we've been
here)
