<< Sharon, in the East we have wet summers and, for the most part, clay soil.
Most arilbreds, like the arils, really require much better drainage than we
cannot provide without extraordinary efforts. Some such as ONLOOKER and
SYRIAN MOON respond to our conditions better than others, but special care
is
required even for these to thrive. One can succeed with many arilbreds in
the East, but it takes a lot of effort. My best success has been when I
grow
arilbreds in pots, and protected from rain during summer, fall and winter.

I'm even further east - right across the Atlantic!!!!
I would say that Clarence's comments also hold true here - I just wish I had
the time to grow more ABs. I use fairly big tubs of potting compost with lots
of grit or bark added (bark is better for improving drainage in potting
compost than grit, we have found) and keep them in an unheated polythene
covered tunnel - cold is not the problem, but wet.
