I. tigridia and tigridia sold in the catalogs and stores are not
the same. Dykes shows a rhizome with lots of roots, and what I buy as
trigridia is a bulb. Does anybody know how this nomenclature can apply
to two obviously different plants?

The confusion here is because Iris tigridia is a species name and
Tigridia is a generic name. There are often duplicate use of names,
especially species names in different genera.

Additional confusion results from the fact that Tigridia is an irid - in
other words, quite closely related to Iris.

I use two basic references to find information. Mathew "The Iris" is a
good overview of irises. He lists I.tigridia as a pseudoregalia iris
from Mongolia and nearby regions of China and Russia.

The other is Clive Innes's "The World of Iridaceae" which list all the
irids and has photographs of most of the genera. This has Tigridia as
bulbous plants from Central and South America. These are the very
beautiful Mexican Shell Flowers that grow so well in Ottawa and continue
to flower over a period of 10 weeks or more. Each large flower dies at
the end of the day but more and more arrive each day.
