<< Paul Black told me the other day that his spuria seedlings always take
an extra year to germinate. Is this one of those species that has to
have a cold spell followed by a warm spell followed by another cold
spell before it will germinate? Or is it because we are in zone 7? >>
Paul is my friend, and I have great respect for his knowledge of irises. I
have only grown a few Spuriae species from seed, e.g. I. spuria subsp.
carthaliniae, I. spuria subsp. musulmanica, I. graminea---all of these
germinated for me the first year...of course if some of the seeds didn't
germinate I tossed them, because enough germinated for my needs. But,
knowing Paul, I would not discount his experience. And he might be talking
about the modern hybrids, which may behave quite differently than the
species. Clarence Mahan in Virginia
