Undoubtedly production cost is a factor, but the more salient reason is that
Mathew made a number of revisions and additons in the 2d edition. Except for
historic purposes, the lst edition is of lesser utility. And if one wants up
to date taxonomic information, the 2d edition is a must. A book involving
taxonomy is almost outdated as soon as it is published---but then some people
have opined that it is the purpose of taxonomists to keep gardeners in a
state of confusion. And for the most part they succeed. :) Cheers,
