RE: All America Selections

Mike, so that's you! I've always thought the whole idea behind the Dr. Loomis
Iris Trial Garden (okay, I'm not great at names unless you're an iris) is
terrific. Frankly, I've paid more attention to your reports of what does well
there than to the Popularity Poll, especially since this area is almost as
climatically over the top. Keep up the great work!

When I started the Dr. Loomis Iris Trial Gardens the intent was to be one of
4 or 5 gardens located throughout the United States, dedicated to testing
iris over a 3 year period. I asked AIS for designation as an AIS National
Test Garden but that was never approved. Because of this disapproval we set
our or own awards system and have invited entries from any hybridizer.
Participation has been wonderful.

Some hybridizers have not been thrilled with the methods we grow the iris,
because we are not concerned with pumping the plants with huge amounts of
fertilizer. We are testing for good plants, that meet all the requirements
of an iris. Color is only a small percentage when point scoring.

History has proven that iris that have performed well in Colorado Springs,
have also proven to be winners in other areas. Maybe someday some other clubs
will start another garden like this. I would be willing to help in any way
possible.
